Multi-factor authentication is showing up in many consumer solutions from Gmail to iOS version 10.3 or later. Turn this feature on within either of these solutions and immediately you will be forced to enter a verification code at time of login. There are additional configuration features that allow for unique devices to be skipped post initial authentication, but any NEW device being used will need to receive and have the end user enter the verification code. You may be required to be “verified” at every based on your configuration settings.
I’ll admit, even as a Multi-Factor Solution provider, I do sometimes find the so called “extra authentication step” to be somewhat cumbersome, that is until you received a nice little message box on your iPhone asking you to authorize a new device in foreign country, a country in which you are not currently located (we all travel at some point in time). Should that happen, please promptly decline and immediately change your password.
Here is a overview description of Multi-factor authentication for companies looking to secure their business solutions.
Multi-factor authentication serves a vital function within any organization -securing access to corporate networks, protecting the identities of users, and ensuring that a user is who he claims to be. Evolving business needs around cloud applications and mobile devices, combined with rising threats, and the need to reduce costs, require entirely new considerations for access control.
Today, organizations are asking:
- Can I address new demands of my business — like cloud and mobile devices?
- How do I map access control methods to business risk and the needs of my users?
- Can I centrally manage, control and administer all my users and endpoints?
- Who controls my user data?
- How can I incorporate additional security layers to help me further fortify against threats?
- And how do I keep it all practical and cost-effective?
