A couple of years ago, Green IT was top of everyone’s mind, but in typical hype cycle fashion, it has moved down the curve and has been replaced by virtual, cloud and now this year social IT.
But is Green IT really dead? With oil prices continuing to fluctuate, the cost of powering and cooling a datacenter seem to be even more important. An article recently popped up again about using bio gas to fuel data centers and when googling, found out that an actual scientific paper had been produced; Design of Farm Waste-Driven Supply Side Infrastructure for Data Centers. So that then got me thinking, if they can power a data center with 10,000 dairy cows, with the three large dogs in the back yard, I should at least be able to power the mobile phone and ipad.
But on a serious note, there still seems to be a lot of potential “green” to be saved by better power management, continuing to use SaaS based applications like remote meetings, heck even just turning off the lights for a floor when no one is there.
So why do we still see buildings with all the lights on when no one is home. Why do we still see desktops fully powered up and left on overnight.
We’ll dig deeper into this subject and talk to some experts.
The question for the day is; What are you doing to improve your green IT initiatives?
